In 1972, he received the Dr. rer. nat. degree in physics with a work on superconducting RF structures from University of Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Germany. In 1968, he joined the Research Center (Forschungszentrum) Karlsruhe. He was involved in the development of superconducting RF accelerators and particle separators, in the development of high current neutral beam sources, and in the investigation of a spallation source. Since 1984, he has been working in the development of high-power gyrotrons, especially in the experimental program and in technical investigations.
